New developments and trends both within the library and information arena and in society, with increased globalisation, urbanisation and digitalisation, emphasise the imperative for library associations and institutions to be ‘learning organisations’ and to develop their staff by providing opportunities for training and development. The specialised skills and qualifications of librarians and other information professionals play a key role in supporting the transformation of society and transforming the ways that libraries provide services to their communities.

Faced with the challenges associated with these ambitious goals, the interaction between the different actors of professional training and development is crucial. Among these actors, library associations must play their full part, both to contribute to this important task for the future of libraries and librarians and to further affirm their own role and contribution in building the society of tomorrow. The objective of this session is to showcase innovation and best practice and to inspire library associations around the world.

The IFLA Management of Library Associations Section (MLAS), in collaboration with Education and Training Section (SET) and Continuing Professional Development and Workplace Learning Section (CPDWL), invites proposals to be presented at a two-hour session at the next IFLA General Conference on 24-30 August 2018 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

We are seeking proposals for 6-8 lightning talks (presentations of 7-8 minutes each) intended to nourish a panel discussion with the expectation of audience discussion.

The talks, with PowerPoint presentation, should address but are not limited to, the following issues:

  • associations providing initial Library and Information Science (LIS) training
  • associations supporting continuing education
  • associations offering coaching and/or mentoring opportunities
  • associations undertaking LIS course accreditation
  • associations determining and registering access to the LIS profession.

Language of the session

The working language of the session will be English.  However, presenters may also give their talk in any of the IFLA working languages. Simultaneous interpretation for this session has been requested but is not guaranteed; therefore, presenters are encouraged to provide a PowerPoint presentation in English to facilitate the understanding of ideas presented.

Important dates

  • All proposals must be submitted by 28 February 2018 the extended deadline: 7 March 2018.
  • Notification of acceptance will be sent by 20 March 2018.
  • Successful candidates will submit a full paper by 1 June 2018. The full paper will be posted online.

  • Title of proposed presentation
  • An abstract of the proposed paper of 500 words maximum, in English
  • Name(s) of presenter(s)
  • Position or title of presenter(s)
  • Employer or affiliated institution of presenter(s)
  • Email address
  • Telephone/fax numbers
  • Short biographical statement(s) regarding the presenter(s)

Please note

At least one of the paper’s authors must be present to deliver a summary of the paper during the program in Malaysia. Abstracts should only be submitted with the understanding that the expenses of attending the conference will be the responsibility of the author(s)/presenter(s) of accepted papers.

All papers that are presented at the WLIC 2018 will be made available online via the IFLA Library under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license.

Authors of accepted papers must complete the IFLA Authors’ Permission Form.

All expenses, including registration for the conference, travel, accommodation etc., are the responsibility of the authors/presenters. No financial support can be provided by IFLA, but a special invitation letter can be issued to authors.
